Culinary Club selling Entertainment Books

3 May 2011

Lynfield College Culinary club is in its third year and each year sees more students getting involved. Meeting after school on Tuesday afternoon, a group of enthusiastic students comes along to learn new skills and experience different foods.

The club originally started because of our strong involvement in Culinary competitions. We needed a time where we could prepare and practise for the growing number or competitions and also we needed to cater for the growing number of students interested in participating.

It then developed further with a strong Hospitality focus where chefs were invited along and students learnt new skills and tricks of the trade. The last two years have also seen apprenticeship advisors from Sky City and the Restaurant Association come and speak to the culinary club about careers in the food industry.

This year we have even more enthusiastic students coming along on Tuesday afternoons. We have been focusing on seasonal foods in Term 1 but in Term 2 we will be preparing for the upcoming culinary competitions.

To enable us to purchase food for this club and pay for competition entries, we need to fund raise. This year we have chosen to sell ‘Entertainment Books’. The new 2011 | 2012 Auckland Entertainment™ Book is packed with 50% off, 25% off and 2-for-1 offers from the best restaurants, hotel accommodation, attractions, and leisure activities. To see more valuable offers, flip through the Book online here

The new Entertainment Book is only $65 and you will receive $15,000 worth of valuable offers that can be used from now until 1 June 2012. Plus, $13 of your Book purchase goes towards our community fund-raising - so please forward this information to your family and friends, as the more Books we sell, the more funds we raise.

Pink Ribbon Breakfast

14 July 2011
The idea for this occasion came from our inspirational Technology Faculty leader, Yvonne Townsend. Our Year 13 Advanced Hospitality classes plan, prepare and present two special occasions, focusing on the creative aspect of food preparation and presentation. With the supporting planning, budgeting and evaluation, these 2 units are worth a total of 10 level 3 credits.

In past years the event has been a final graduation dinner for 40 guests, but this year with the change in term dates and with Breast Cancer being close to all of us, it was decided to participate in the Pink Ribbon Breakfast Campaign.

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) is a not-for-profit, non- government funded charitable trust and is totally reliant on grants and donations. It is one of the charities the student council supports with other fund raising events during the year. So our breakfast was another way Lynfield College could support this foundation.

Who could have thought a school corridor could be turned into a restaurant. After the students had finished setting it with pink balloons, flowers, and brightly coloured table settings, it certainly didn’t look like D block. It meant students had to be committed, by working late and starting early in the morning, but all of them were incredibly proud of what they achieved and learnt about event planning and management while guests enjoyed good company, good food and great coffee.

Carpentry Course Produces Masters in Shed Construction

22 September 2011

The Year 13 Carpentry course students have spent this year constructing timber sheds (which would have been for sale publicly had the college not bought them to use as temporary offices during a building programme here next year!).

At a generous size, 3.6m by 2m, and of very solid wooden construction, they could be used to house gardening equipment, bicycles, toys and sports gear, or even as a playhouse for children or an office.

The sheds have been built as part of the NCEA Level 3 Carpentry course which includes unit standards on the use of hand and portable power tools, timber machining equipment, demonstrating safe working practices on construction sites, performing building calculations and demonstrating knowledge of timber used in construction.

The students have taken pride in their building and the growth of their carpentry skills has placed them in a very advantageous position with respect to securing further training and employment next year.
