A Taste of Lynfield

The College welcomed over 300 incoming students for ‘A Taste of Lynfield ’ this week. The Year 8 students had opportunities to have lessons in Technology, Māori, Japanese and other subjects. Year 9 students were available to answer questions about what life was really like in Year 9.

The purpose of the day was to show students that, while starting a new school can be daunting, Lynfield is an exciting, interesting and fun step forward in their learning journey. We are looking forward to seeing them start at Lynfield in 2019.

Feedback from the students and Year 8 teachers has been very positive, and we look forward to making this an annual event ...

Thank you so much for leading this new idea of a taster at Lynfield College. I can say that this has had a real impact on the students from BBI as I am in the intermediate a lot and I have overheard their conversations. They were are so excited to have had the opportunity to have been in a real class along with the Year 9 and 10s.

Hearing them talking amongst themselves about the cool things they learnt in class and how eagerly they told each other their different stories about what they had seen and done in different areas of Lynfield life.

I know personally from my boy Evan, how really excited he was to tell us about what he had learned. I asked him if he felt better prepared for life at Lynfield and his words were “ yes I feel so much more comfortable and relaxed and so looking forward to it now.“

So again thank you for giving our young intermediate students this opportunity - its outstanding. Mark and Leanne Hewett

Ngati Whatua Marae Hui

On Tuesday 13 November representatives from the Kahui ako and Maori Focus Group (including Ms Knell, Whaea Maihi, Whaea Tebay and Whaea Leauga) attended a hui at Ngati Whatua Marae.

Kaumatua, Kui, Board representatives and whanau of the iwi welcomed us with a karanga and Whaea Tebay responded, being our kaikaranga. We shared korero about our kahui ako and were informed about the iwi and the struggles within their hitori.

To connect with the iwi who described themselves as 'Ahi kā' - the occupant group with whakapapa links to the whenua 'burning fires' was very humbling and the feedback from participants was positive.

He mihi mahana ki te iwi me nga kaiako, tumuaki, mema poari, whanau hoki kia tautoko tenei kaupapa.

Tremaine's Acting Skills Win Award

Tremaine Leaso won best supporting actor in the Showdown Secondary Schools’ Competition Awards on Saturday 3 November at the Mercury Theatre. In the Lynfield College production of Wheeler’s Luck, he played Perry, an aging farmer who constantly babbled and had a crush on Miss Piggy.

Tremaine played the role with imagination taking every opportunity to get a laugh out of the audience. No one can forget his hilarious hobbling gait every time he entered or exited. His larger than life interpretation of this character won him the award.

Tremaine has produced many unforgettable performances at the school and he will be sorely missed now he is moving to the next stage of his life.
