Sporting Honours

Again we celebrate some individual sporting successes:

Nick Weaver is in the Auckland All-Stars U17 Baseball Senior League team, representing NZ at the Asia-Pacific Middle East Little League Tournament in the Philippines from June 30th to July 8th. NZ will be defending their title as winners from last year. If they win, they go on to play U17 World Series in Bangor, Maine in August this year. Nick is seen in the photo with John Key wishing him well before their departure.

Juee Bhide has competed in her first ever Senior International Match against World No 145 and she won it. Squash NZ is very pleased with the win and posted good comments about it.

Michael Durham has advanced two ice skating grades and is now competing at Junior Men Level. He was placed a very creditable 4th in a competition in Hollins/Sydney even though he was only in this grade a matter of 7 weeks.

Nathan Maisey has been named in the NZ Cross Whites U14 Soccer team to compete in Perth in September.

Keegan Maisey continues to make outstanding progress in his Ice Hockey. He was recently included in the West Auckland Admirals, playing in the NZ Ice Hockey League.

And we also salute the sporting successes of past pupils :

Josh Maisey has won Gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m (Open Men’s) at the Oceania Track and Field Championships held in Tahiti. He continues to train and race with the goal of making the NZ team to the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Tyla Nathan-Wong has just returned from Russia with the New Zealand Women’s Sevens Team plus the Women’s Sevens World Rugby Cup. A big congratulations to Tyla and the team.

Together…Lynfield rugby players and 4 World Cups!

8 of Lynfield’s Year 10 and Year 11 rugby players were selected to join 110 players from 9 other Auckland schools to take part in a closed (invitation only) All Blacks Coaching Clinic at Eden Park on Monday, 9 September.

New Zealand Rugby and the Auckland Rugby Union offered this amazing opportunity to be personally coached by All Blacks.  Players were divided into 6 groups based on their playing positions and 2 or 3 All Blacks worked with each group, improving specific skills and showing the boys how to reduce risks of rugby injuries.

The boys were also introduced to the captains of each of our 4 winning Rugby World Cup teams (men’s and women’s XVs; men’s and women’s 7s), each holding the World Cup their team had won.  This is the first time all four Rugby World Cups have been in the same place at the same time!! (image below, left)  With the Lynfield link to the Women’s 7s Cup (ex-student Tyler Nathan-Wong was a member of the winning NZ 7s team) some of the boys got their t-shirts signed by the captain of that team, Portia Woodham (image below, right).

10 Wins + 0 Losses = GOLD for Lynfield Netball

Last week our top netball team competed in the Upper North Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament which has been a feature of secondary school netball since 1993.  Only the top team from each school, from Taupo to North Cape, is able to compete in this prestigious week of competitive netball so there were 112 teams throughout the A, B and C grades.

After playing two 50 minute games in each of the first 4 days, Lynfield was the only school in the B grade which was undefeated and its smallest winning margin was 9 goals!  Lynfield was the topic of conversation around the courts…….other B grade team officials were often seen on the side line of our games – trying to plan tactics to foil us on court!!

The semi-final was against St Mary’s, which was our toughest opposition during pool play.  Our girls were pumped and performed with flair, discipline and absolute precision to systematically outplay St Mary’s and win in convincing style 37 – 13.  This game won us promotion to the A grade for 2014 and secured us a spot in the final.

Waihi, the only other undefeated team in our grade (although it had drawn one of their pool play matches) was to be our opposition in the B grade final.  The side lines and stands were full of spectators from many different schools.  Lynfield had huge support from the other West Auckland schools, while Waihi was being cheered on by the Waikato contingent.  Again our girls showed the mental and physical toughness required and demonstrated what Lynfield netball dominance feels and looks like on court!  The final score was 38 – 27, the B grade title and a GOLD medal!!

Players: Akanesi Fakafanua, River Gavet, Keeley Hall, Unna Harder, Bailee Hughes, Grace Kaleta, Grace Kukutai, Alice Neville-Smith, Tasia Sissing, Tayla Wesche, Cassidy Wilson, Zoe Woolf.

Winter Sports Underway

The past two weeks have been extremely busy in the Sports Office as staff work with over 550 students who are members of the 54 teams representing Lynfield College in weekly sporting fixtures this winter. Many, many thanks to staff and those in our parent community who have volunteered their time and expertise to coach or manage a team – the students really do appreciate this.

Competition began last week for junior netball, football, badminton, basketball, lacrosse and 1st XV rugby. Hockey, squash, rugby league, senior netball, table tennis and all other rugby start this week. Results so far have been mixed but there have been some excellent wins for our top netball teams at each level and also in boys football (1st XI scoring a first game win – something we have not achieved for some time). Our 1st XV have been promoted to Premier grade, 3rd division and had an excellent game against Sancta Maria in which they were narrowly defeated by 1 point!! It is promising to be a very exciting season for our Lynfield teams.

Waterpolo Junior Team's Winning Form

Our waterpolo enthusiasts are enjoying the new year and our junior team competed extremely well during Term 1. In a one-day tournament last week they finished 2nd behind Auckland Grammar in a field of 9 schools. They won two of their three games, scoring 14 goals with 9 against.

Dragonboating fun

The secondary schools' dragonboating day was thoroughly enjoyed by both our crews. The girls' team made it to the plate final and had the race of their life. Well done for first timers!

Congratulations to Two Year 9 Athletes

The team has today left for the Interprovincials which this year are being held at Alpine Energy Track, Aorangi Park, Timaru this weekend. The team consists of 11 boys & 11 girls for each age group. This is a wonderful experience for those athletes selected.

Champion Bowler Liam Van Rijn

Congratulations! Liam Van Rijn is the Auckland Secondary Schools Lawn Bowls Champion for 2013.

The boy's singles post section play was completed with Liam taking out the title winning all his games by large margins. He comfortably beat Benjamin Fisher (Dilworth School) in the semi-finals by 17 shots to 4.

Liam got off to a good start in the final.  He picked up 4 shots on the first end and 2 shots in the following end to lead 6 shots to nil, and never looked back to win the singles title by 10 shots to 4 against Lance Fisher from Kelston Boys.

Liam has been rewarded for his good form by being selected for the Auckland Secondary Schools Lawn Bowls team competing against Waikato next weekend. Also joining him is his fellow pairs partner from Lynfield College Brayden Silby.

All Blacks Visit Lynfield

Last term our rugby 1st XV won an Adidas Scholarship when the senior players in the team made a video which showed why they were “All in” when it comes to rugby.

On Friday there was huge excitement as All Blacks Israel Dagg, Beauden Barrett, and Francis Saili together with the Adidas team, were welcomed to our school with a powhiri and cultural haka in the Sports Centre.  They were visiting to present the boys with the team’s prize of a complete playing strip, tracksuits, boots and gear bag.

After winning the scholarship the team members designed the new jersey, shorts, socks and track suit then Adidas had all items custom made to fit the measurements of each team member.  All boys were individually fitted with boots of exactly the right size and design for their playing position.  While this was happening there was the opportunity to meet and chat with the 3 All Blacks as well as have some photos taken with their heroes!

Rugby Boys Score Adidas Scholarship

Congratulations to our First XV boys who put together a video entry to the Adidas School Scholarship competition - and won! They were required to convince the judges that our 1st XV team members are “All in!” by displaying the Adidas values of fun, sportsmanship, dedication, camaraderie, school pride and community spirit.

At the beginning of next term some of the current All Blacks will be at the college to present the team with their prize - which includes a complete 2013 kit (uniforms, footwear and tracksuits) custom designed by the team and supplied by Adidas.

The judging panel, headed by All Black Israel Dagg and Phoenix football player Jeremy Brockie, said

"The calibre of entries was really high, we were impressed with the effort put in by the teams and their schools."

 Dragonboats Firing Up

For the first time in a number of years Lynfield is entering one, maybe two, teams in the Auckland Secondary Schools' Dragonboating Regatta on 24 March at Lake Pupuke.

Interest in joining the sport has been quite overwhelming and 33 students are currently signed up. Training takes place each Wednesday at Westhaven between 5 and 6pm, and students from all levels are keen to participate in this high-energy event. Being able to swim 50m is a prerequisite of course.

26 secondary schools are competing at the regatta and we are sure the Lynfield students will have a lot of fun on the water. The photos below were taken by parent Oliver Glampe at last week's training.
