Congratulations to Past Student Opal Vickery (2015)

Past student Opal Vickery has become the very first woman to win The Electrical Training Company Apprentice of the Year Award, 2019. The ETCO Apprentice of the Year is an annual award based on nominations from over 700 electrical apprentices and is a much-coveted award within the industry.

After gaining NCEA Level 1 with Excellence in 2014, Opal spent her last year in and out of the Careers Centre proactively exploring options beyond school, requesting STAR funding to gain NCEA credits at Techtorium Computer Engineering Institute in Hardware in Year 12 and achieving NCEA Level 2 with Merit.

Opal signed up for an Electrical Apprenticeship with ETCO (The Electrical Training Company) at the end of Year 12 December 2015. She joined the AB Electrical team as a fully registered ‘tradesman’ in September 2019 and quickly became a valuable tradesman making a positive impression with customers and fitting in well with the team. AB Electrical is delighted to have Opal join the team as their first female tradesman.

If you are thinking about getting into a Trade, consider becoming an Electrician. You can find out more information with ETCO (The Electrical Training Company). They help with training, employment, and placement of electrical apprenticeships.

Year 10 Leadership Physical Education Class in Action

On Thursday 5 December, fourteen Year 10 students (from the Year 10 Leadership Physical Education Class), attended a Ki-O-Rahi tournament hosted by Blockhouse Bay Intermediate.

For our students, it was their opportunity to demonstrate what they had been working hard on throughout the year – their leadership, out in the community. They were required to umpire the games in which primary school’s from our local community participated.

Students did an exceptional job of making quick decisions, handling challenging situations, encouraging and supporting others, and of course representing both our school and themselves with pride. An amazing day was had by all!

STUDENTS WERE: Chrysler Beckham, Marie Fruean, Tristan Gideon, Kyan Henry, Ana Hingano, Francis Latu, Pou Lemusu, August Luani Otess, Jacob Matson, Eric Nanai, Raithe Savieti, Ashlyn Talosaga Kumar, Robert Tauhinu and Ethan Taito.

2019 Leavers' Dinner

Held on Tuesday 3 December at Sorrento in the Park, the 2019, Leavers' Dinner was enjoyed by all. Celebrating the end of their secondary education, it was also the last opportunity for these students to spend time together.

Organised and run by our Head Boy Michael Howell and Head Girl, Jessika Varney along with our Social Co-ordinators, Alicia Taito and Giordi Gambassi the evening was full of shared memories, mock award presentations and much laughter.

The Class of 2019 have been an exceptionally talented and engaging group of young adults. We are very proud of their achievements and feel confident that they will succeed in their future career pathways and personal journeys.

Images from the evening can be accessed via the link below. Enjoy!

Year 10 Debaters Share their Knowledge

Nine of our Year 10 debaters (Eesha, Sarka, Leigh, Sophie, Stanley, Oliver, Jessie, Vishwa, Carey and Uday) went to Blockhouse Bay Primary and Waikowhai Intermediate on 3 and 4 December this week to mentor over 200 of their students over two days to introduce them to Debating.

As part of the process they performed a ‘show debate’ in front of the students to help them understand the structure of a debate. Our debaters then talked to groups of students to explain to them how debaters prepare their case for a debate.

“Apart from the extra practice and experience we gained from the show debates, we also enjoyed the insightful discussion with the students about the process of preparing a moot.” Leigh Hine (Year 10 Debater)

“I gained a different perspective on how to think about topics.” Sarka Ludvigova (Year 10 Debater)

“A massive thank you to you and your wonderful Year Ten debaters for yesterday. Our students really loved the afternoon and are keen to do more of this type of learning in class which is exciting. Many thanks again for providing the opportunity for us here at Waikowhai Intermediate.” James Robertson.
