Year 12 student Saane Noavea recently performed with Queen City Big Band at the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club. She was selected to sing with the band after auditioning alongside many of the best secondary school singers in Auckland.

The band also features six other current and past Lynfield students: Paul Norman (director), Charlie Isdale (alto sax), Daniel Cho (alto sax) Andrew Isdale (tenor sax), Baylee Verzyde (bari sax), Jake Krishnamurti (trumpet) and Kathleen Tomacruz (guitar).

Queen City is a very highly regarded semi-professional Big Band which has been running for 46 years. The band is directed by Paul Norman, who also teaches at Lynfield College tutoring brass students and directing the premier jazz groups.

PASCH Presentation to Lynfield College

German Ambassador Stefan Krawielicki visited Lynfield College on Thursday 17 of November 2020 to officially present the PASCH plaque to our school. The ceremony took place in the Performing Arts Centre commencing at 11:15 am.

Lynfield College became part of the worldwide network of PASCH schools in October 2018. PASCH stands for the ‘Schools: Partners for the Future’ initiative. The aim of PASCH is to create and strengthen a global network of some 1,800 schools that place a high value on German, have special links to Germany and are dedicated to offering their students the best possible education.

Being a PASCH school means that there will be more scholarships for the school’s German teachers and its best students of German. These scholarships enable teachers and students to attend language courses or professional development opportunities in Germany.

Since 2018, four Lynfield College students have been awarded PASCH scholarships to Germany, which has enabled them to attend a youth course at the Goethe Institut in Frankfurt.

The audience at the ceremony consisted of current Year 10 students who are studying German, together with Year 9 students who have chosen German for 2021 and/or have participated in the Auckland Goethe Society Examinations this year. Also present were Principal Cath Knell, Judith Geare (Goethe Institut Wellington), Alexandra Töniges (National Advisor for German), (former) students and staff members with a connection to German and Germany or language learning in general, and others who may be interested.

Senior Academic Prizegiving 2020

A very enjoyable and successful Senior Prizegiving was held onsite as scheduled on the evening of Tuesday 10 November. We were delighted to see a full hall. The speakers during the evening all acknowledged the support that they had been given by their teachers throughout the year and how much they appreciated the extra efforts made on their behalf.

Despite 2020 being a Covid affected year, the scholarships that our students were awarded reached a combined total of $238,500. A considerable increase on last year’s $219,500 and a tribute to the quality of the applications the students submitted.

We would particularly like to recognise and thank the new sponsors who have contributed to these scholarships. Most of these have been past pupils. It is heartwarming to have them approach us with this generosity.

Bootcamp Blast

This year has certainly challenged both students and teachers alike, especially those preparing for NCEA Level exams which start on Monday 16 November.

As a way of circumventing the challenges, Language and Languages Faculty Leader Jennifer Moss and Deputy Principal Sandy Harris devised a catchup programme for Year 11 and 12 students to gain more credits before NCEA exams start.

This series of three block tutorials assisted students with their English and Literacy credits.

Katya Blong Wins Olympic Gold

Katya Blong (Y10) won a gold medal as a member of an NOC (National Olympic Committee), Ice Hockey team at the Youth Winter Olympics - first NZ gold medal at a Youth Winter Olympics.

Katya went to the United States to play Ice Hockey last September with the intention of staying there indefinitely. Due to Covid, Katya’s school sent all their students home to finish the school year and exams remotely, so Katya is back at Lynfield in 10KJ.

In early January she was a member of the New Zealand Women’s U18 Ice Hockey team competing at the World Championship IIB In Mexico City, Mexico. She then went on to the Youth Winter Olympics officially known as the III Winter Youth Olympic Games, a major international multi-sport event and cultural festival for teenagers held in Lausanne, Switzerland from 9 - 22 January 2020. Katya competed in a mixed-NOC team consisting of athletes representing different NOCs and therefore different countries. This unique format sees 13 players from 13 different countries play in a 3 x 3 ice hockey tournament. There are huge challenges as they have never played together before and often don’t speak the same language!

https://www.olympic.org.nz/news/new-zealand-team-wins-first-ever-gold-medal-at-winter-youth-olympic-games/

This new initiative of making up teams of players from countries who can’t send team to Olympics was a huge success. All players around the world had to do a qualifying test and get ranked. Teams were then made up very evenly depending where the player ranked. Katya was only English-speaking player in her team.

Since returning to NZ Katya won another gold medal in October when she represented Auckland in the U18 boys team, and a silver in the Auckland Women’s team and was named ‘Best U18 Player in New Zealand’.
