Year 12

Students continue to explore drama techniques, theatre forms, elements, conventions and technologies used in producing drama.

12 Drama takes a more integrated approach to learning across the achievement standards within the course. Rather than assess each standard as a discrete body of knowledge and skills, a thematic approach is taken that allows for learning in two or more standards at one time within a rich learning context. The focus or connecting themes are arrived at through class exploration and are often in response to student interests and specific abilities. Opportunities for the theme to be related to topics and issues covered in their other subjects are incorporated wherever possible.

Responsive and inclusive pedagogies are employed to provide relevant contexts for exploring ideas and developing skills. Although a largely practical course, care is taken to ensure concepts and terminology specific to Drama are embedded in each unit.

Student work is assessed by the following Achievement Standards.

Achievement Standard Number Internal /  External Title and learning contexts. Credit value
Achievement Standard 91213
               Drama 2.1
Internal Apply drama techniques in a scripted context
A focus on New Zealand plays ensures that students are exploring a range of perspectives that reflect New Zealand society both present and historically. Students work in either pairs or small groups to present scenes from New Zealand plays. They are assessed on their ability to use the drama techniques of voice, body, movement and space to interpret and create characters that clearly present the intentions of the playwright.

Achievement Standard 91214    Drama 2.2 Internal Devise and perform a drama to realise an intention
The context for devising can be connected to themes explored in the scripted production and will also combine with learning in the specific theatre form explored. Students will demonstrate their learning of physical theatre through self-devised work that extends ideas and themes that arise through the class production text.

Achievement Standard 91216      Drama 2.4 Internal Use complex performance skills associated with a drama or theatre form or period
The theatre form explored is that of Physical Theatre. This enables students to develop their body techniques and encourages a more fluid and imagistic approach to presenting ideas for theatre. Physical theatre techniques are then combined with the devising achievement standard and students create powerful original theatre that has considerable impact on an audience. It is often possible to view a live professional production during the year that uses physical theatre features and this reinforces their understanding across three achievement standards within the course.

Achievement Standard 91218                   Drama 2.6 Internal Perform a substantial acting role in a scripted production
Depending on the size and make-up of the class they will either present a series of thematically linked scenes from various plays or a single play or even a double casting of a single play. This is performed as a class production and incorporates all theatre technologies of lighting, sound, costume, props and set. The performance may be presented to a school-based audience during the day or at an evening performance for students, family and friends. The production is directed by the teacher with students taking on various production roles but with all students having a significant acting role to perform.

5
Achievement Standard 91219                  Drama 2.7 External Discuss drama elements, techniques, conventions and technologies within live performance
Students will attend at least two live professional theatre productions during the year. The external exam requires them to demonstrate their understanding of specified aspects of their own performance work as well as the production they have viewed as a member of an audience. The level of success achieved in the external exam will enable their course work to be endorsed with Merit or Excellence as appropriate.
