This course is designed for our Year 9 and Year 10 students. The study of business for them is about how individuals and groups of people organise, plan, and act to create and develop goods and services to satisfy customers.
Business is influenced by and impacts on the cultural, ethical, environmental, political, and economic conditions of the day so
issues such as sustainability, citizenship, enterprise, and globalisation are central to both business and the study of business.
The knowledge and skills gained in business studies, and exposure to enterprise culture, can help shape 'creative, energetic, and enterprising' young people (the curriculum vision statement) who will contribute to New Zealand’s economic future.
In business studies, students develop their understanding of business theory and practices in a range of relevant contexts, through experiential as well as theoretical approaches to learning.
Co-Curricular Activities
Living in a large city is ideal for enabling our students to see how the concepts learned in the classroom translate into economic activity. Relevant field trips are an essential component of the learning experience, as are in-school projects and community activities.
Our Year 9 Business classes visit the Tip Top ice cream factory in Mt Wellington every term to see how Tip Top makes the best ice cream in the world!
The Tour Guides explain the ice cream-making process while students watch the ice cream production from enclosed viewing galleries and - of course! - sample ice-cream as they watch a short DVD all about Tip Top.
Year 10 Business classes visit the Auckland District Court. The trip offers students the unique opportunity to explore, first hand, the critical role the District Court of Auckland plays in the justice system of New Zealand.
The visit assists students in their understanding of criminal and civil law. Students also enjoy experiencing actual cases and seeing first-hand the consequences of breaking the law. |

Thanks to
Ports of Auckland for offering our school the opportunity to experience a day of discovery including a cruise around the busy Ports of Auckland wharves. The live commentary helps us to identify port activity, including points of interest such as tug boats, container cranes, tank farm and Viaduct Harbour.
After the cruise there is an opportunity to go into the Museum for lunch in a sheltered area, explore the galleries and discover more about the essential part the sea has played in New Zealand's history.
Students who study Year 10 Business Studies thoroughly enjoy this day!!!
Market Day at Lynfield College is an authentic learning experience for our junior secondary school students which enables them to work in groups to design, produce and sell a product of their choice at a one-off market event.
With the emphasis on student-centred learning and the meeting of key competencies in the New Zealand curriculum, students make their own decisions, problem solve, meet deadlines, prepare a business plan to achieve the 6 Level 1 Business Studies Credits.
Feedback from students
“Market Day was amazing, definitely my best day EVER at this school.”
“We were allowed to talk all lessons because we were talking in our groups about our business.”
“We were allowed to make our own decisions instead of being told what to do."
